Application
Process:
All applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

All applicants must successfully pass a thorough background investigation including a credit check, pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Other tests may be required depending on the type of opening. The other tests include but are not limited to a written test, hearing test, typing test.
Road Patrol Deputy – requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
2. Must be a U. S. Citizen.
3. Must have a valid Operators License.
4. No prior criminal convictions.
5. Presently certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Michigan – OR
have completed a Police Academy certified by the Michigan Law Enforcement
Officers Training Council and be eligible for certification in the State of Michigan.
6. Must complete the Department Field Training Program successfully.
Corrections Officer – requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
2. Must be a U. S. Citizen.
3. Must have a valid Operators License.
4. No prior criminal convictions.
5. Must complete the Department Corrections Officer Training Program successfully.
Communications Technician (911 Dispatcher) – requirements:
1. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
2. Must be a U. S. Citizen.
3. Must have a valid Operators License.
4. No prior criminal convictions.
5. Must complete the Department Communication Technician Training Program successfully.
Compensation
Package:
The Jackson County Office of the Sheriff offers a competitive compensation package which includes an excellent retirement plan.
All new employees pay a percentage of their health insurance coverage with the county paying the remainder for medical, dental, and optical insurance choices found in the cafeteria plan.
Most positions within the Department are union positions and therefore compensation/benefits are dictated by contracts which are negotiated by the respective unions.
As of January 2, 2008 the Road Patrol Deputy wages range from $16.21 per hour or $33,708.51 per year to $23.15 per hour or $48,160.32 per year. The patrol contract is currently in negotiations so this pay scale will change.
As of January 2, 2008 the Corrections Officer wages range from $15.51per hour or $32,261.54 per year to $21.90 per hour or $45,545.71 per year. The corrections contract is currently in negotiations so this pay scale will change.
As of January 2, 2008 the Communications Technician wages range from $16.85 per hour or $35,048.00 per year to $19.02 per hour or $39,561.60 per year
Probationary
Period:
All new employees of the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff have a probationary period which is twelve (12) months from the date of hire. During this probationary period new employees must successfully complete all testing, training, and required performance standards.
