The
Jackson County Jail and its staff members are utilizing
a dynamic training program to improve jail services and
enhance the criminal justice system. Through the leadership
of the Jail Commander, Dave Luce and Lieutenant's
Carl Carmoney and Howard Tanner, the Jackson County Jail has
implemented both strong and innovative technologically based
systems to assist them in this endeavor.
Through the use of computerized digital photographic imaging,
photographic reproduction costs have been eliminated. The
digital images have assisted both City and County investigators
to enhance crime-solving means. The system has reduced storage
requirements while increasing accessibility 24 hours a day.
The implementation of live scan fingerprinting has increased
efficiency of fingerprint technology. The capability of
viewing the fingerprint prior to submission to the Michigan
Department of State Police Central Records Division has
eliminated the constant return of unsubmittable fingerprints.
In the near future this system will be capable of submitting
the fingerprints to the Automated Fingerprint Identification
System and receive immediate returns. This will allow for
the immediate submission and identification of suspects
as well as solvency of dated crimes.
HISTORY
The
Jackson County Jail is centrally located in downtown Jackson.
The 200 bed facility houses sentenced and un-sentenced Misdemeanants,
Felons, and Michigan Department of Corrections residents.
The original Jackson County Sheriffs Department and Jail
depicted below was located approximately two blocks away
on Cortland Street. Originally designed to include a residence
for the Sheriff and his family, the building was vacated
in the early 1950's for the existing site on W. Wesley Street.
In 1978 the Wesley Street Jail was expanded to include additional
housing units and a centralized receiving area. The Wesley
Street Facility is currently undergoing renovation, and
is expected to become completely operational again in June
of 2004.
In September of 2003, construction of a 240 bed direct supervision
facility was completed on Chanter Road. The facility boasts
state of the art security and surveillance equipment, and
is the first jail of its type in Michigan. This vast undertaking
was completed on-time and under budget, and will eliminate
costs associated with boarding out local inmates to other
county jails as well as free up much needed bed space at
the Wesley Street Facility for violent, un-sentenced, and
felony offenders.
INFORMATION
Due to the safety and security of the inmates, no out date will be given to the public (no exceptions). If you would like an inmate’s release date, you must receive it directly from the inmate.

CROWDS
Due
to the limited size of the visitation area, only inmate
visitors will be admitted to the visitation area. After
visitation please leave the area. If at the Chanter Road
facility, do not approach or yell through the perimeter
fence or honk your horn at inmates in the yard as such actions
are detrimental to the safety and security of the facility.
Violators will not be allowed back onto jail property. If
