MEMA

The Michigan Emergency Management Association is dedicated to promote health, safety and protection of lives and property by facilitating coordinated response and recovery during emergencies and disasters throughout Michigan.

Membership is comprised of local emergency management coordinators, state emergency response professionals, fire, law enforcement, public safety and representatives from private industry, and volunteer organizations. Each year membership elects a President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Third Vice President, and Treasurer. The Secretary is appointed by the President. A Board of Directors consisting of the elected officers and a representative from each emergency management district of Michigan is vested with the administrative and management responsibilities of the association. Standing Ad hoc committees guide policy making.
The Association is non-profit originally organized in 1959 as the Civil Defense Directors of Michigan. The membership year is January 1 to December 31.

OBJECTIVES

Promote the protection of lives and property of all persons in the State of Michigan in the event of man-made emergencies or those due to natural causes. Foster the general welfare and professional interest of the Michigan Emergency Management Association.

To act in an advisory capacity to the Emergency Management Division of the Michigan Department State Police and the Office of the Governor. WITHIN THESE BROAD OBJECTIVES, THE PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION IS TO; Establish a more effective and better coordinated liaison between local management agencies and the State and Federal Governments. Assemble information from local emergency management agencies concerning common experiences to improve the professional stature of all emergency management agencies, and to disseminate such information to the members and to the State and Federal Governments. Provide local emergency management agencies with a vehicle of communication with the State and Federal Governments. Act as a liaison between industry, commercial and educational organizations and local emergency management agencies.

SERVICES

Michigan Emergency Management Overviews (MEMO) is the official publication of the Michigan Emergency Management Association. MEMO focuses on Association activities, current emergency response news at the local state and federal levels, and the emergency management concerns of industry and volunteer organizations. Current legislative issues are highlighted. Training workshops and seminars are conducted to meet the professional needs of the membership. Awareness programs are designed to educate the public of what they can do to help save lives and property in their communities. Coordination and communications are maintained with a network of allied associations and various organizations to assist local communities and emergency management programs in the application of a multi-hazard program.
